Book Review – New book – Shadow Reaper (Shadowlands Series) by Amos Cassidy

My Rating -Fourstar

Some things in this book are clear. The world as we know it has ended. This time, it is an alien invasion. Some things are not so clear. These aliens did not arrive from outer space.  They appear to have broken through some kind of barrier from elsewhere.  Some of them at least seem to have massive power to destroy humans.  But who and what are they?

Ashling and her brother, Clay, live in an underground bunker built for an apocalypse. Ash is what is known as a ‘Reaper’ – she and a team of other reapers travel regularly across the Horizon – a permeable barrier between the area where the humans live and the place known as the Shadowlands.  They have been reaping for years in the closest part of this place, the area known as the Cusp.  They search the ruined buildings for food and other useful articles which they carry back to Shelter to augment what can be grown or made there.  It is getting to the point where the Cusp has been picked pretty clean.  The Reapers feel the need to go further – into the area known as Beyond.

“Don’t even go there. You’re not sorry. I know it, you know it, and the whole fucking world knows it. What I want to know is why. You got what you wanted. You’re a Reaper, so why take these unnecessary risks?”

The Shadowlands are full of various kinds of monsters, large and small. When Ash has a chance to learn more, it appears that the alien worlds that have invaded Earth are places that all share the same space, and they have always been there.  All that has changed is that the barriers have broken down.  As circumstances force Ash further and further into this world, she learns more and more about it and about herself.  But it never seems to be enough.

My heart pounded against my ribcage, my pulse roared in my ears, the thump of it thick in my throat. I was moving toward the thing that had my friend. The darkness that was devouring her, the darkness I needed desperately to touch.

The characters are well-developed and engaging, and the story keeps your attention. There is a lot in here that I do not understand, and a lot is left unresolved in the end, setting the scene for the next installment of the story.
